The hiatus comes to an end

It’s the first blog post of 2023 and my completely unplanned hiatus from the blog!

The last time you heard from me, I had just wrapped up my first live-to-picture performance and was starting to finish up my fall semester. It’s been quite some time since then and I think it’s time you catch up…or I catch you up.

During my winter break, I took a complete break from music. After a long semester of cranking out new music, I was creatively drained. So, I took some time away from creating and spent my time elsewhere. That ‘elsewhere’ was the Keystone Musical Arts Center. That may sound familiar as it’s the non-profit I spend my summers with working on business tasks and summer camps. I did some more organizational office work for them, but I also had some creative moments creating posters, collages, and business cards.

Once break unfortunately came to an end, I moved back up to Rochester to start my spring semester. I’ve already hit the ground running with composition. I’m working on a rather interesting string quartet. I really wanted to push myself while working with Harry, and this is nothing like the music I’ve written before. I’m also expanding my horizons into the jazz world. I started taking improvisation lessons and playing in the jazz lab band last semester. But with that knowledge, I’m turning my focus to big band composition. Those being my main focus, I also have many other ideas that are cluttering the photos and voice memo apps on my phone.

I’m also pushing myself outside of my comfort zone and taking some classes in commercial music composition. I don’t sing and I don’t do lyrics…so I’m already uncomfortable.
