Spring Breakin'

Hey, y’all!

As you may have seen, I spent my spring break in Virginia this semester. Some Naz students and I had the awesome opportunity to work with Appalachia Service Project. ASP does home repairs for low-income families. We were lucky enough to work on two different sites. At the first, we finished an in-ground drainage system and built a 4x4 deck. We teamed up with a group from Shenandoah University to build a set of stairs at our second site. Long story short, we learned to use some power tools and build complicated structures with minimal instructions.

As far as composition goes, I don’t think there is much to update. I finished a draft of my 2-minute film, and I’m almost done with the first pass with my 4-minute one. The first movement of my string quartet is finished and I’ll be starting rehearsals for it soon.

I am having a bit of writer’s block when it comes to the second movement. A good part of my composition lesson was spent discussing ways to start this new idea. Especially since my instinct was to go back to my old style of writing…and I really don’t want to do that. The first movement is something I’m so proud of and is a major development in my composition skills. I want the second to expand on that and not dwindle the quality of this future multi-movement piece.

I’ll update you on how I push through this.
