Rehearsals!!!!!!!!!

Hello!

Lots of things have been happening over the last few weeks. I helped out in my friend, Ryan McNally’s, Piano Concerto premiere, performed in my studio piano recital, gathered performers, started prepping for rehearsals, and been in many, MANY, rehearsals. And we’re only 7 days into April!!

I started the second movement of my string quartet last week, and it’s already taking a completely different route than my previous attempts. I learned I need to give myself goals or objectives when writing. It gives me a sense of direction and structure while still having complete creative freedom. My goal from the beginning was for this piece to be a fast movement. Since then, I decided I added the challenge of manipulating the meter. So, I started writing in 5/4, a meter I’ve never written in before. I developed an interesting ostinato figure and subconsciously began harmonizing it with tritones (also something I don’t do).

On another note, I finished my big band piece. And if you are one of my performers reading this, I WILL HAVE PARTS OUT TO YOU TODAY I PROMISE! I’m so excited for this premiere and the many more jazz pieces to follow.

Until next time!
