Oh, to Write like Chopin

This week was the second week of classes and I am beginning to feel exhausted. Was taking 19 credits this semester a great idea? Not exactly. Will I do it again next semester? Most likely. What can I say for myself? I have a lot of classes I want to take in the next 4 years (more or less).

Anyway, it’s back into the grind of weekly composition lessons. Every week I get a new music theory assignment with a mini-lesson on the next theory topic. I am also working on a Chopin inspired piano piece this semester and I am so excited! I have already written the chord progression for the first 16 bars (with voice leading corrected) and wrote the melody; however, it is awaiting approval from my teacher. I decided to go with A minor. I know Chopin pieces tend to be a bit moody so I’m going for despair with a sense of hope (as my high school music theory teacher would describe a half-diminished 7 chord).

I am still working on my choir piece while taking on my other assignments. I am almost done writing it and have already started to tweak and perfect it with my composition teacher.

I also got my baton this week in conducting class and she is beautiful. I can’t wait to name her and bring her on all of my adventures throughout my career.
