Coming out of my March Hiatus

The last month has been a non-stop downhill rollercoaster.
Since spring break, I have consistently worked on my cue for a scene from The Matrix. This cue was so demanding and somewhat difficult to score. My first demo was mostly scrapped. But now on the other side, I’m so glad I started over. The score is much more effective and I think I brought my skills to the next level.
Writing was one thing, but recording was another. The session was this past weekend, and we each (all six of us) had 20-25 minutes to record all 3 minutes of our score. This is possibly more difficult than writing the actual cue. 😂 I tried to be very strategic with my time by breaking up the piece and recording it in sections. I started with the most difficult parts and moved to the easiest. In this case, I started at the end and worked my way back to the beginning. I enjoyed this method and I may use it more going forward. It not only gave me a good take, but more to choose from. And keeping the musicians’ attention concentrated on a few bars was much more efficient than doing longer takes. There are only a few bars I wasn’t able to get perfect (because we ran out of time)9, but we were able to fix them in the mix session.
Now that the Matrix weight has been lifted off my shoulders, I have time to focus on wrapping up some student films. I’m not going to lie; I was stressed out of my mind trying to juggle The Matrix with my other projects and classes. But I thankfully have more time than I originally anticipated. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to slack off! I also need to get a head start on the final assignment for my film scoring techniques class. This cue is for a nature documentary, a scene of our choosing. I have a flamingo scene picked out and some ideas for the music already. I hope to flesh this out over the weekend.
Now that my rant is over, I am sooo looking forward to summer! I have lots of fun plans and work plans for the break. And I’m really excited about warmer weather! I want to retire my jacket for the next few months, please.
Until next time.
