Jumpstarting the Semester

I have been non-stop busy since the start of classes. The assignments keep coming, but I’m determined to stay on track.

We’re currently gearing up for our first recording session next weekend. Our demos for our animation cue were due this week. I am proud of what I could do since I don’t have much experience with slapstick animation. This was also a challenge at “mickey mouse-ing,” or hitting different actions in the scene. I had a big roadblock when I started. I had some ideas on what instruments or effects I wanted on the other hits, but I sat at my piano for two hours trying to come up with an idea with no progress. I wish I had a strategy to overcome my writer’s block, but I woke up with the melody playing in my head. I recorded myself singing it at 2 am. 😂 But from there, the cue wrote itself. I was surprised at how comfortable I was when composing this and how simple it all seemed. It felt natural. I cannot wait to add some finishing touches and get this music recorded!

Right after the recording session, I will be scooting over to the Netherlands. I am so excited to be attending the Young Composers Meeting 2025, hosted by the Orkest De Erepijs. The week will be spent with the ensemble rehearsing new works by the participants (surprise!). We will all be spending the week in lectures, rehearsing our new works 😉 with the ensemble, and having lessons with this year’s senior composers: Richard Ayres, Tansy Davies, Yannis Kyriakides, Wilbert Bulsink. I cannot wait to work with these wonderful musicians and meet all my fellow composers.

One last little update: I wanted to share my interview with Bold Journey. It is important to me that my compositional journey is transparent. So, having this opportunity to share what I’ve done so far was such an honor. If you're interested in learning a little more about my little life, please consider giving it a read.

Until next time,
