I am so excited to talk about what has happened over the last few weeks!
Last week, I was in the Netherlands for the Young Composers Meeting with the Orkest de Ereprijs. This new music ensemble selects 13 composers to spend the week in Apeldoorn. Each of us was asked to write a 3-minute piece for the ensemble. We got to attend the rehearsals throughout the week and received lessons with senior composers Richard Ayres, Tansy Davies, Yannis Kyriakides and Wilbert Bulsink. At the start of the week, one of the ensemble members, Erik-Jan de With, sadly passed away. Out of respect to the ensemble and his family, I am going to hold off on sharing more about this experience. I am so appreciative that they continued to play our music and share their talents with us young composers. It was truly an unforgettable week.
Right before I left the country, we had our first recording session of the semester! We recorded our animation cues with a decently sized ensemble. This cue offered a lot of learning experiences for me. I tried out a whole different style of composition. And I learned how to set up a Pro Tools for scoring session. It’s surprisingly easy to do, but also easy to mess up. 😂 Overall, the session went very well. I mixed everything with our engineer, Rich, on Monday and I am elated with the result.
Our next recording session is this weekend. These cues are focused on scoring under dialogue. I am so excited to hear the score live. Especially since my solo string samples have been driving me crazy this week.
Until next time,
