The Engraving Details

Hi, y’all!

It’s been a great two weeks. I got a lot finished, and I’m so excited to focus my attention on projects I’ve been waiting to get to.

First off, the Chernobyl parts are (finally) finished! It was quite a long process, but so educational and rewarding. The whole process of engraving Chernobyl has been a learning process. My professor, Dr. Vazquez, helped guide me through how the score should look and how to use my software efficiently to achieve “the look.” So now, I know a lot more about the engraving details and how I want everything to sit on the page. Hopefully, this knowledge will help the next project move faster.

This process also made me realize the importance of the look of the score/parts. It elevates the quality of the piece without changing a single note. I feel very professional with a good-looking score. There is always a joke in our studio that when we start making a good bit of money, we’ll just pay someone to engrave our scores for us. I, however, feel like this exhausting process turned me off from that option. I want to have complete control over the look of my scores.  And in complete honesty, I really did enjoy the process. It’s tedious in a relaxing way, and I don’t feel that it’s nearly the burden that I used to see it as.

On to my next big projects! I have lots of music still to write, and lots of performances to rehearse for. Make sure to check out my upcoming performances on the home page. It’s the year of premieres!

Until next time,
